ATSG, FIRE, NSIT, SCO Charts to Watch
It was a bloodbath on Wall Street on Thursday as the indices rolled over and rolled over hard, especially in the last hour when they just caved after failing to take out resistance, closing at 1200 on the S&P 500, down 60 points, and almost a 5% drop. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 105 and change, or over 5%. So, it was a very bad day on Wall Street. With a day like this you’ve got to look for pockets of strength. So we'll take a look at some of those stocks, and again, there are several ultra-shorts that are doing very well that will be discussed here as well.
Air Transport Services Group, Inc. (ATSG) was up 80 cents or 16 1/2%, or 2.1 shares traded on Thursday. That’s the second heaviest volume this year, and the heaviest volume on an up day. It snapped back near resistance, the 50-day, and lateral price support, so it will have to do some work to get back up to 6.00. If it does, look for a quick move up to 7.00, and then an intermediate target at 8 1/2.
Sourcefire, Inc. (FIRE) had a good day on Thursday. It jumped 1.72, and was up almost 3.00. The high was right at declining moving averages. It went up to it and backed off. It’s the highest level, or the big breakaway gap, on 1.8 million shares. This is a good one to watch going forward.
Insight Enterprises Inc. (NSIT) had a nice day on Thursday. It exploded on a breakaway gap, and went from 16 1/2 to nearly 19 1/2, tested key lateral price resistance in the zone between February and July highs, and then backed away quite a bit. Still, it’s up 1.57, or 9 1/2%, and closed above the 21-day and 50-day moving averages with strong volume and good surge in technicals. If it does firm up in the next day, or two, and takes out 19 1/2, this stock could get into the low 20s.
ProShares UltraShort DJ-UBS Crude Oil (SCO) spiked up on Thursday for 6.22, or 12%, on 2.1 million shares traded. Although the volume wasn’t fantastic, On-Balance Volume really surged to the highest level since March. Although it’s at lateral price resistance at the top of the channel, it’s worth watching. Any pullback to test the 54 1/2 - 55 zone may be an opportunity to get into. Short-term target is around 65.
Other stocks in our Charts for the Day are Air Direxion Daily Large Cap Bear 3X Shares (BGZ), Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), Lihua International, Inc. (LIWA), Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (MMI), Merge Healthcare Incorporated. (MRGE), ProShares UltraShort Silver (ZSL).

Charts of the Day - Harry Boxer, TheTechTrader.com
Ambac Financial Group, Inc. (ABK), which has exploded in the last two sessions, gapped up big time on Friday and ran. Today it gapped up again and really ran hard, jumping 1.15 or 105% on 410 million shares. Huge volume. Although it spiked up and is overbought, it may very well have enough momentum to reach the 3 1/2 - 3.75 zone.
Catalyst Pharmaceutical Partners Inc. (CPRX) had a big breakout, jumping 136% or 1.09 on 10.6 million shares. Very strong action. It broke through key overhead resistance and may make it as high as 2 1/2-3/4 zone, my next major trading target.
Cost Plus Inc. (CPWM) certainly looks good, and after breaking out of a big wedge the last couple sessions has run very hard, followed through today, and broke lateral price resistance. Next trading target would be up as high as 6 - 6 1/4 zone.
Silicon Motion Technology Corp. (SIMO) has been motoring steadily higher from the early March lows under 3.00 and has gone up to 6.00, more than doubling in the last 5 weeks. Very strong momentum. You may see this stock get up to 6 3/4 range, my short-term trading target.
Also highlighted on Harry’s Charts of the Day are American International Group (AIG), Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), Callon Petroleum Co. (CPE), Keryx Biopharmaceuticals (KERX), Magnum Hunter Resources Corp. (MHR), Pyramid Oil Company (PDO), Planar Systems Inc. (PLNR), Rexahn Pharmaceuticals (RNN), Radient Pharmaceuticals Corporation (RPC).

Volatile Session Closes Lower
The stock market indices ended lower today to end the month and the quarter, but were volatile during the session. They started out with a bit of a gap down, dropping quite sharply in the first 15-20 minutes, testing the lows of the last couple sessions on the Nasdaq 100 at 1955 support.
That held and the S&P 500 did take out support at 1169.70, reaching 1166, but when the NDX did not confirm they bounced back in a 5-wave move, reaching new session highs and testing yesterday’s late rally highs at around the 1970 area on the NDX and the 1174.5 zone on the SPX. When they failed to break through in late afternoon trading, they rolled over sharply and come down to new session lows on the NDX but made higher lows on the S&P 500. In the last 10 minutes they snapped back a little bit to bring them off the lows, still ending negative on the session.
Net on the day, the Dow closed down 50.79 at 10,856.63, the S&P 500 down 3.84 at 1169.43, and the Nasdaq 100 down 9.62 at 1958.34. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) was also down 2.33 at 366.57.
Advance-declines were 3 to 2 negative on the New York Stock Exchange and about the same ratio on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was about 2 to 1 negative on New York on total volume of 1.15 billion. Nasdaq traded a little over 2 1/3 billion and had about a 12 to 11 negative ratio.
TheTechTrader.com board was down mostly by small fractions as a result of the narrowly negative close of the indices. Point-plus movers included Clean Energy Fuels (CLNE), up 1.52 to 22.78, and Omeros Corporation (OMER), up 1.02 to 7.05, a nearly 17% gain. But the star of the day was Air Transport Services Group (ATSG), which finished at 3.35, up 1.04, a 45% gain today.
Other gainers of note: RINO International (RINO) jumped to 23.73 up 72 cents. It was trading lower in the aftermarket after earnings were released. TiVo Inc. (TIVO) advanced 35 cents to 17.13, Mindspeed Technologies (MSPD) 20 cents to 8.01, and Acme Packet, Inc. (APKT) 28 cents to 19.28. Universal Travel Group (UTA) gained 39 cents to 9.91.
The only point-plus loser on the board today way China Agritech (CAGC), which dropped 1.97 to 24.86.
Other fractional losers included Amylin Pharmaceuticals (AMLN) down 46 cents to 22.49, China Automotive (CAAS) down 34 cents to 23.10, and China Valves Technology, Inc. (CVVT) down 44 cents to 13.01, ENCO gave back 64 cents and closed at 2.64. That was yesterday’s big gainer.
JAZZ Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) fell 54 cents to 10.90 and Sketchers (SKX) 51 cents to 36.32.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were down early, rallied back through mid-session and rolled over late in the session to end up negative on the session at the end of the month. With Friday being Good Friday, tomorrow is basically the end of the week, so we’ll see if the market can hold support which it’s been pressuring for a couple of days now.
Good trading!
Harry
